ROOM A/B   CONCURRENT SESSION TWO     JANUARY 21     10:45 to 12:15 pm
Risk Management Tools and Strategies for Direct Seeders
OVERVIEW:

The last couple of years have been volatile for growers in the PNW and this session brings together a diverse group of industry experts to share their thoughts on what growers can do to mitigate their exposure to risk. Representatives from the banking industry, the National Risk Management Agency and grain marketing groups will provide a comprehensive view of risk management strategies for direct seeders.

SPEAKERS: l Rick Williams
Risk Management Agency, USDA,, Spokane, WA
  l Craig Crider
VP Operations-Commercial Lending, Northwest Farm Credit Services, Pendleton, OR
  l Shawn O'Connell
General Manager, Columbia Grain, Clarkston, WA

ROOM C   CONCURRENT SESSION TWO     JANUARY 21     10:45 to 12:15 pm
Soil and Fertility Amendment Products
OVERVIEW:

Appropriate soil fertility is a key component in economic and environmentally viable crop production systems. The fertilizer industry is working diligently to find new ways to increase fertilizer use efficiency that allows nutrients to be available to the plants when they are needed, thereby improving both fertilizer economics and environmental stewardship.

Influencing Soil Health in Direct Seed Systems
OVERVIEW: Soil biology continues to be an expanding field of interest for farmers and scientists alike. As scientists dig into this subject they are connecting the links between tillage intensity and soil health, crop diversity and soil health and the link between soil health and crop viability, health and productivity.
SPEAKERS: l John Aeschliman

Maintaining CRP Benefits with Direct Seed
OVERVIEW: Direct Seed for conversion of CRP to Annual Crop
Farm the Best, Leave the Rest; Alternatives to Annual Crop

As CRP contracts expire in the PNW, and landowners consider how to bring this land back into annual crop production, it is important for them to consider all the costs and to look at all the alternatives before they return to a business as usual system. Direct seed is proving to be a viable option in many cases but before getting to that stage, growers should consider the alternatives they have to annual crop production.
SPEAKERS: l Tim Melville(Concurrent Session ONE)

Practical Tips for Succeeding With No-Till (Chem) Fallow
OVERVIEW:

Driving through the fallow regions of the PNW, it is often obvious there are different levels of success in the chemical no-till fallow fields. This session will strive to identify the key elements that are required to make no-till chemical fallow a success.

Wheat Breeding for Direct Seeding
OVERVIEW:

Direct seed has some unique challenges in the PNW with appropriate, vigorous wheat varieties being one of them. This session will encourage a dialogue between growers and wheat breeders to identify what is needed and what is being done to ensure the gaps are being addressed and direct seed systems are on the forefront of wheat breeding research.
